The Chilean Navy is considering buying additional second-hand Type 23 frigates after British representatives informed that ships of the type could soon be for sale, military sources in Santiago told Jane's .
Chile operates three Type 23 frigates procured second-hand in 2005 and commissioned between 2006 and 2008. It has been interested in buying a fourth for years.
The acquisition would allow the Chilean Navy to replace Type 22 frigate Williams (former HMS Sheffield ), which was acquired in 2003 and reaches the end of its service life around 2025. Support for Williams ’ Rolls-Royce Olympus and Tyne gas turbines will become more expensive and complicated in 2025.
